Corduroy Records & Detective Agency

Hi all, and thanks for dropping in to check out the Corduroy website, as you can see I haven't changed it for a very long while. But never fear please get in touch to order any of the stuff listed or even to enquire about any bands, records etc beacuse about 2 thirds of what we have isn't even listed on the site. Just drop us a line and we'll get back to you super quick and help you out. In the next few months I hope to get a sort of 'history of Corduroy' site on here so stay tuned.

Nick answers some Q's

What was your reaction when you first heard the song?  Of course I loved the 7" when I first heard it but to be honest I always preferred the track "So many things on the B-side, as this was the first song they ever wrote or recoded and they did it on a tiny little tape deck down at the Corduroy offices. I always thought that song had a really special feel to it.

Did you think at the time that they would ever become as popular or successful as they did?
No I guess I didn't. I mean I always hoped they would but it's rare for such good things to happen to such good people. Anyway I'm glad it did in this case.

What did you think of Mikey's guitar style and Brendan's approach to live performing and vocals?
I always loved Mikey's guitar playing and he's really versatile. Once when my band (Shutdown 66) was recording we realised we wanted 1 more track for the LP. Mikey was producing us and our guitarist wasn't at the studio so Mikey just wrote a stomping new guitar riff for us on the spot, we added lyrics and had a whole new song recorded in about half an hour. Shurdown's guitarist still gets grumpy about it because several people have told him it's their favourite track and it's not even him playing on it; it's Mikey!
Brendan is a great front man with a unique vocal style and he certainly inhabits    his whole ECSR persona when on stage, which is quite different from his off stage personality. It's just lucky he came across those magic super powers gloves!

What was the Corduroy warehouse like back in 2004? People like Guy Blackman and Richard Stanley and Mikey working there. It must have been pretty loose and fun. ECSR jammed there didn't they?
Corduroy was a lot of fun back then and a pretty amazing place to work. As you mentioned lots of great creative people working there and I think there was a real feeling of camaraderie as everyone was into similar (but slightly different) stuff.
Brendan used to work there too and that's where Mikey carried out his 'evil scientist' experiments to indoctrinate Brendan with only the coolest musical sources. And I must say his experiment appears to have worked spectacularly well!

Corduroy was the kind of place where you never knew exactly what the day might bring. You could walk down from the factory to the office and find the White Stripes in there doing a live to acetate, or maybe Sonic Youth who came to cut a 7" and had so much fun that they stayed all night and recorded a double 12".

As well as the guys you mentioned there was Mark "Sonics" Nelson from the Stabs working there (and calling me up from New Zealand to see if I could bail the Stabs out of jail)! Conrad from The Devastations and later Conrad Standish, Frosty from Sunday Arvo Sons etc. etc. A truly inspiring bunch of people that it was a pleasure to hang out with.

I really got into the Utopian Ideal of Corduroy. The fact that we had "taken over the means of production" and could do whatever we wanted. Perhaps if ECSR took anything from their early days at Corduroy then it was that sort of "we can do anything" attitude.
